A Quarrel That Was Never Necessary

Many people assume that faith and reason are ancient enemies, locked in a struggle where only one contestant can survive. According to this familiar picture, reason belongs to the laboratory, while faith retreats into the quiet shadows of private feeling. Yet the assumption deserves examination, because the sharpest thinkers across the centuries rarely treated the two as opponents. Instead, they suspected that a mind divided against itself cannot honestly pursue the truth it claims to love.
