The Word That Waits Inside the Work

Buried inside the English word "vocation" is an older Latin verb, vocare, which means simply "to call." To speak of work as a vocation, therefore, is to claim that ordinary labor answers a summons rather than merely fills a schedule. That claim can sound extravagant, especially to anyone whose mornings are governed by alarm clocks, deadlines, and the quiet arithmetic of rent. Yet the idea persists across centuries precisely because it dignifies what would otherwise feel like endless, unremarkable repetition. When we believe that our tasks are addressed to us, and not merely assigned, the smallest duties acquire an unexpected weight. History gives the notion its stubborn power, since reformers and mystics alike argued that God addresses people through the plow and the pen as surely as through the pulpit.

Three Ordinary Callings

Consider the farmer who rises before dawn to inspect soil that will never applaud him. His labor is hidden, seasonal, and vulnerable to weather he cannot command, yet it feeds strangers he will never meet. Consider the teacher who explains the same theorem for the twentieth year, watching comprehension dawn on one more unfamiliar face. Her patience is a form of generosity, since she invests in futures that will unfold long after she has been forgotten. Consider, finally, the clerk who records transactions, files documents, and answers questions with a courtesy that no ledger measures. Each of these workers performs tasks that the world calls small, and yet each sustains a community that could not function without them. We are tempted to reserve the language of purpose for careers that glitter, forgetting that most of civilization rests upon undramatic hands. A society that honors only its celebrities will slowly starve, because someone must still grow the wheat, grade the essays, and balance the accounts. The idea of vocation, then, is partly a rebellion against a culture that measures worth by applause.
