The Youngest Shepherd

David was the youngest son in a large, busy family. Each day he led his father's sheep out to the hills. He watched over them under the wide and open sky. When a hungry lion crept near, David was not afraid. He swung his leather sling and drove the beast away. God gave him a brave and steady heart.

The Giant's Shout

One day David carried fresh bread to his older brothers. They were soldiers in the king's large and mighty army. But the whole camp stood still, quiet and afraid. A giant named Goliath shouted down from the other hill. He was far taller than any man they had ever seen. His voice was loud, and his armor shone like fire. "Who will dare to fight me?" he roared each morning. No soldier stepped forward, for their hearts had melted with fear.

Five Smooth Stones

David heard the giant, and a fire rose inside him. "I will go and fight him," he told the king. The king gave him heavy armor and a sharp sword. But the armor was far too big for a shepherd boy. David took it off and picked up his simple sling. He chose five smooth stones from a cool, clear stream. "The Lord saved me from the lion and the bear," he said. "He will surely save me from this giant too."

The Stone Flies

Goliath laughed out loud when he saw the small boy. But David walked toward him without any fear at all. "You come to me with a sword and spear," David called. "I come to you in the name of the living God." He spun his sling and let one small stone fly. The stone struck the giant hard upon his head. Goliath fell down, and the whole army began to cheer. That day a shepherd boy showed everyone a mighty truth. Real courage does not come from size or swords. It grows in a heart that quietly trusts in God.
