A Gift to Keep

Have you ever been handed something precious to hold for someone else? Maybe a friend passed you a baby bird, or a brimming glass of water. You carry it gently, because the treasure is not really yours to keep. You are only guarding it safely for a little while. Many Christians believe the whole earth is a gift much like that. God made the world, called it good, and then trusted people to care for it.

Learning to Notice

Caring for creation always begins with paying close attention. A good caretaker looks slowly and asks quiet, curious questions. Where do the bees find their flowers in early spring? Why is the creek running lower than it did last year? When we truly notice the world, we begin to understand it. And when we understand, we start to care about what we once ignored.

Small Hands, Real Work

You do not need to be grown up to help. You can plant bright seeds that feed the hungry butterflies. You can turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can carry a trash bag along a beach or a trail. Each single choice seems tiny, yet small choices add up quickly. A forest, after all, is simply many single trees standing together.

The Trusted Servant

Jesus once told a story about a master who left on a long journey. Before leaving, he trusted his servants with his money and his property. The faithful servants worked hard and made the master's gift grow. One servant, though, buried his share and did nothing with it. When the master returned home, he was glad for those who had cared well. This story is inspired by the parable of the talents, Matthew 25. Our world is a treasure we have been trusted to grow, not to bury.

Passing It On

Someday you will hand this same world to the people who come after you. What kind of gift do you hope to place in their hands? Clean rivers, singing birds, and shady green forests are all worth protecting. Caring for the earth is not really a heavy, tiresome chore. Instead, it is a quiet way of saying thank you. We keep the gift well because we are truly grateful for it. And gratitude, much like a seed, tends to grow when we share it.
