The Man Nobody Liked

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in the busy town of Jericho. He was very rich, but he was not happy at all. He owned fine clothes and a large house, but no real friends. Each day he collected taxes for the rulers, and he kept extra coins for himself. The people had to pay him, yet they hated him for his greed. When he walked down the street, neighbors turned their faces away. Zacchaeus felt small inside, and not only because he was short.

A Teacher Was Coming

One morning, exciting news rushed through the streets like a strong wind. A teacher named Jesus was passing through Jericho that very day. People said that he was kind to the poor and the forgotten. Zacchaeus wanted to see this teacher with his own eyes. But a thick crowd filled the road and blocked his view completely. Because he was short, he could not see over anyone's shoulders.

Up the Sycamore Tree

So Zacchaeus did something a rich man would never usually do. He ran far ahead and climbed high into a leafy sycamore tree. From that thick branch, he could finally see the road below. His heart pounded as the crowd came closer and closer. When Jesus reached the tree, he stopped and looked straight up. "Zacchaeus," he called warmly, "come down, for today I will stay at your house."

A Changed Heart

The crowd began to grumble and whisper many unkind words. Why would a good teacher eat with a cheating tax collector? But Jesus did not turn away from him at all. Something warm and completely new stirred inside Zacchaeus that afternoon. He remembered every family he had cheated and every tear he had caused. For the first time, he saw his greedy life clearly, and he was truly sorry.

Making Things Right

Zacchaeus stood up tall and made a bold, joyful promise. "I will give half of everything I own to the poor," he said. "And if I have cheated anyone, I will pay them back four times as much." Jesus smiled, glad that this lost man had finally come home. That day, one greedy heart turned around and began again. The whole town would soon notice the change in him. This story is retold in my own words from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 19.
