The Longest Winter

Snow had covered our valley since the first week of November. My name is Mira, and that winter I was eleven years old. The cold arrived earlier than anyone expected, and it refused to leave. When the river froze solid, Papa lost his job at the grain mill. Mama stretched every meal, counting the last potatoes as if they were coins. Outside, the wind carried snow across the fields in long white waves. Still, each evening we gathered close around the small iron stove. "We may have little," Papa said quietly, "but we still have one another."

The Thinning Woodpile

By the middle of January, our woodpile had shrunk to almost nothing. My younger brother, Sam, watched the shrinking flames with worried eyes. I pretended that I was not afraid, though the wind howled against the windows. Each night we wrapped ourselves in every blanket we owned and waited for morning. Mama's hands grew rough and red from hauling water and washing our clothes. Yet she hummed the old hymns while she worked, soft and steady as a clock. Somehow her quiet singing made the long darkness feel a little smaller.

The Story Mama Told

One night a fierce storm rattled every board and window in the house. To calm us, Mama opened her worn Bible and began to read aloud. In her own gentle words, she told us about the wild birds and flowers. God feeds the sparrows, she explained, though they neither plant nor gather harvest. He clothes the meadow lilies more beautifully than any wealthy king. This story is inspired by the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter six. "If God remembers the smallest sparrow," Mama whispered, "will He ever forget us?"

Neighbors in the Snow

The next morning, an unexpected knock echoed at our frosted wooden door. It was old Mr. Han, who farmed the land beyond the frozen hill. He had pulled a heavy sled loaded with firewood and a sack of grain. "No family should have to face a winter like this alone," he said. Papa's eyes filled with tears, and he gripped the old man's hand. That day I understood that hope often arrives through the kindness of other people.

The First Thaw

Winter did not end all at once, but slowly the days grew longer. One bright afternoon I heard water dripping steadily from the melting roof. Small green shoots pushed up through the mud along the sunny southern wall. When the mill reopened in spring, Papa was among the first men hired. That evening we ate our first fresh meal in months, laughing around the table. We had held tightly to hope, and somehow hope had held tightly to us. Looking back now, I believe the light was always coming, even in the darkest days.
