Leaving the Porch Light

When you switch off the porch light, the crowded sky slowly begins to change. At first you see only a scattered handful of stars. Then, as your eyes adjust to the dark, hundreds quietly appear. The longer you look, the more the emptiness fills with distant light. A backyard you have known for years suddenly opens into something far larger. The stars are not scattered around the sky like spilled grains of salt. Instead, they move in patterns that people have tracked for thousands of years. Ancient sailors once steered by them, trusting the night sky to hold its shape. Farmers watched certain stars rise so they could learn when spring would arrive. Because the heavens keep such faithful time, astronomers can predict their motions precisely. The same equations that describe a falling apple also trace a planet's long orbit. Eclipses, for example, can be forecast years before they ever happen. A universe built on pure accident would not behave so dependably.
