The Favorite Son

Long ago, a young man named Joseph lived with his large family in the land of Canaan. Joseph was one of twelve brothers, and his father loved him more than the others. To show this love, his father gave him a beautiful coat that the older brothers envied. Joseph also had unusual dreams, including one where bundles of grain bowed low before him. When he shared these dreams, his brothers grew jealous and could barely speak kindly to him. They could not imagine ever bowing down to their younger brother. Yet Joseph did not know that his hardest days lay just ahead.

Sold and Betrayed

One day the brothers were far from home, watching the family's sheep in distant fields. When Joseph came to check on them, their anger finally boiled over into cruelty. They seized him, argued about his fate, and sold him to traders bound for Egypt. Then they lied to their father, claiming a wild animal had killed Joseph. Just like that, Joseph was gone. He was carried into a foreign land, frightened, lonely, and far from everyone he loved.

Faithful in Hard Times

In Egypt, Joseph worked honestly and soon earned the trust of a powerful household. Even after he was falsely accused and thrown into prison, he refused to grow bitter. He believed that God had not forgotten him, even in that cold and lonely place. Day after day, he chose to do what was right, no matter who was watching. Slowly, quietly, he was becoming a man others could depend on. While in prison, Joseph explained the hidden meaning of other men's dreams. Word of his wisdom spread until the king himself called for him.

From Prison to Palace

Joseph warned that seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of hunger. Amazed by his wisdom, the king placed Joseph in charge of storing food across the land. When the famine finally arrived, Egypt still had grain while other nations began to starve. Desperate people traveled great distances, hoping to buy enough food to keep their families alive. Joseph had risen from a forgotten prisoner to the second most powerful man in Egypt. Among the travelers, one ordinary day, came ten familiar and worried faces.

The Choice to Forgive

Joseph's brothers bowed low before him, never guessing that he was the boy they had sold. He could have taken revenge for every wrong they had done to him. Instead, Joseph wept aloud and finally told them who he really was. He told them not to be afraid, because he no longer held their wrong against them. He explained that God had turned their cruelty into a way to rescue many lives. Then Joseph forgave his brothers and welcomed his whole family to live in Egypt.

This story is inspired by the life of Joseph, told in Genesis, chapters 37 to 50. His choice shows that forgiveness can be stronger than years of pain and betrayal.
