The Long Road

Ravi was sixteen when soldiers marched him far from the green hills he loved. A powerful empire had swallowed his small country, and it wanted the brightest young people. They would be trained, renamed, and taught to serve a king they had never met. For many days Ravi walked, and each mile stretched the distance between him and home. He wondered whether a person could stay himself in a place built to remake him. His mother had whispered a blessing before he left, and he repeated her words often. Yet he carried something no soldier could seize: a quiet promise he had made to God.

The King's Table

The palace was grander than anything Ravi had ever imagined. Golden lamps burned along every hall, and silent servants moved like careful shadows. Each student was offered rich food carried straight from the king's own table. The meat smelled wonderful, and the wine looked sweet, but Ravi felt strangely uneasy. Some of that food had been offered to idols, and eating it felt like surrender. He did not wish to insult the king or seem ungrateful for the honor. Refusing might seem dramatic, yet he worried far more about who he was becoming. Still, he understood that tiny choices can slowly reshape an entire person.

A Quiet Request

Ravi did not argue loudly or try to stir the other students into anger. Instead, he approached the guard who watched over them and spoke to him gently. "Please allow us to eat only vegetables and drink only water," he asked kindly. The guard frowned, afraid that a plain diet would leave the boys thin and weak. If they looked unhealthy, the king might blame the guard and punish him severely. His three closest friends agreed, though they knew the plan might anger important officials. So Ravi suggested a fair test, one that risked almost nothing for the nervous man.

Ten Days

"Give us ten days," Ravi proposed, "and then compare us with everyone else." The guard agreed, since ten short days seemed like a safe and simple gamble. For ten mornings, Ravi and his friends ate their vegetables and drank their water. They studied hard, prayed quietly, and trusted that God was watching over their choice. Each simple meal felt like an act of trust rather than stubborn rebellion. When the tenth day came, the guard studied the boys and blinked in real surprise. They looked healthier and stronger than the students who had feasted on royal food. News of their quiet health spread slowly through the halls of the training school.

What Remained

Ravi never shouted about his beliefs, and he never shamed anyone who disagreed. He simply held on to what mattered, even when holding on felt costly. His courage was quiet, the kind that appears in ordinary, unglamorous choices. This story is inspired by the account of Daniel in Babylon, told in Daniel 1.
