The Lamp in the Dark

Aran had lived in the temple since he was a very small boy. His mother had once promised him to God's service, and so he remained there faithfully. The quiet temple was the only home that he had ever truly known. By day he carried jars of water and folded the priests' robes with quiet care. Each night, before the great lamp burned low, he swept the cool stone floors. The old priest, Eli, could no longer see well, so Aran became his patient eyes. The boy loved the silent hours, when the courtyard held only shadows and pale starlight. Still, he sometimes wondered whether God ever noticed one small and ordinary helper.

The Voice

One night, while the lamp still glimmered faintly, a gentle voice called his name. "Aran," it said again, sounding clear and kind across the deep sleeping dark. He sat up at once and hurried to the old priest's narrow little room. "Here I am," he whispered, certain that Eli had surely called for him. But the priest, still half asleep, shook his head very slowly in the dark. "I did not call you, my child; go back now and rest." Then the old man drifted quietly back into a deep and untroubled sleep. Confused, Aran returned to his mat and pulled the thin blanket close around him.

Again and Again

The strange voice came a second time, and then it came a third. Each time the boy ran, and each time the priest gently sent him away again. Aran began to doubt his own two ears in the heavy temple silence. Was he only dreaming odd dreams beneath the softly flickering evening lamp? Was the night wind simply playing tricks among the tall stone pillars? Yet the sound had felt truly real, like someone standing quietly very near. He pressed his palms together and tried hard to steady his racing breath. He waited, wide awake, his heart beating fast against his thin and trembling ribs.

Learning to Listen

At last the old priest understood exactly what was happening on this strange night. "The Lord himself is calling you," Eli said, his tired eyes suddenly growing bright. "If the voice should come again, do not run here to me. Instead, answer it yourself, and say that you are truly ready to listen." Eli had heard that same voice long ago, in the years of his own youth. So Aran lay back down, trembling, and stared into the wide darkness above him. When the voice spoke his name once more, the waiting boy did not move. "I am listening," he answered softly, "so please tell me whatever you wish."

Morning

What Aran heard that night, he kept quietly and carefully within his own heart. When morning came, the courtyard felt somehow larger and full of new purpose. For the first time, he believed that God had known his name all along. The whisper had asked for nothing except his attention and his willing, open heart. He understood that a true calling is not always loud, sudden, or grand. Sometimes it arrives as a whisper, patient enough to wait until we finally answer. This story is inspired by the calling of young Samuel, in 1 Samuel 3. Like Aran, we may each need practice before we learn to truly listen.
