A Word We Think We Know

Grace is one of those words that feels perfectly familiar until someone asks you to explain it. We use it for dancers who move smoothly and for hosts who forgive a clumsy guest. Yet the deepest meaning of grace is stranger and more surprising than either of those pictures. Grace, in its truest sense, is a gift that no person could ever truly earn. It is kindness offered freely, not because you deserve it, but because the giver simply chooses love. To understand grace, we may need a story far more than we need a tidy definition.

The Shepherd Who Counted Again

This story is inspired by the parable of the lost sheep, told in Luke 15. A shepherd once kept a flock of one hundred sheep, and he knew every one of them. Each evening he counted them carefully as they crowded, one by one, through the narrow gate. One night, however, his careful count stopped short, reaching only ninety-nine sheep in the fold. Most people would shrug and stay safe with the large flock they still had at home. Instead, the shepherd left the ninety-nine behind and walked out into the darkening hills. He climbed over sharp rocks and crossed cold streams, calling the missing animal by name. At last he heard a thin, frightened cry drifting up from a rocky ravine below. When he reached the trembling sheep, he did not once scold it for wandering away. He lifted it onto his shoulders and carried it home, laughing with relief the whole way.
