The council of Hollow Pines needed a new overseer. The villagers expected another distant official, someone who would issue commands from a warm office while ignoring their daily struggles. For an entire month, Elias asked questions rather than giving orders, which puzzled the farmers who had braced themselves for higher taxes. He learned that the eastern wells had been failing for years, and that widows often endured winter without enough firewood. These were problems no report had ever mentioned. Rather than announcing a grand reform, Elias quietly repaired the broken water pump behind the granary with his own hands. The villagers watched their overseer kneel in the mud like a common laborer. Slowly, they began to wonder whether real power might look different than they had assumed. He wrote nothing down for the council, choosing instead to remember each face and each need. Because he treated their concerns as his own, the farmers gradually lowered the guard they had raised against every stranger.
