A World That Never Stops

Somewhere a screen is always glowing, and somewhere a phone is buzzing quietly for our attention. Our culture often treats constant busyness as the clearest available proof of a person's worth and seriousness. We measure ourselves by how much we produce, and we grow uneasy when our days fall quiet. Rest, within this restless way of thinking, begins to look suspicious rather than healthy or wise. We treat it as a luxury for the idle, or a reward that must first be earned. Yet an older wisdom, rooted deep in the opening pages of the Bible, tells a very different story. That wisdom insists that rest is neither laziness nor waste, but something we were given.

Rest Woven Into Creation

The first book of the Bible, Genesis, describes how God shaped the world across six ordered days. Light was divided from darkness, the seas from dry land, and the sky was filled with stars. Then, on the seventh day, the account says something surprising: the Creator rested. This retelling is inspired by the account of creation in Genesis 2. God did not rest because the labor had drained him, for the passage never hints at weariness. Instead, he paused to bless that day and to set it apart, marking it as something holy. Rest, therefore, was woven into the design of the world itself, a rhythm built into time. It existed before any human being had ever grown weary or thought to ask for a break.
