The Limits of Self-Made Meaning

Within the Christian tradition, every person is understood as intended, known, and cherished long before achieving anything at all. This conviction does not diminish human effort; rather, it anchors that effort in a foundation nothing can easily shake. Skeptics may object that appealing to a Creator merely relocates the mystery instead of solving it honestly. Still, a worth that is granted from outside us explains our persistent hunger for significance far better than accident could. Because the source stands entirely beyond us, our value quietly survives our worst days, our humiliating failures, and even our deaths.

The Shepherd Who Searches

An old story, inspired by the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15, illustrates this claim with striking clarity. A shepherd who owns a hundred sheep notices one evening that a single wandering animal has gone missing. Rather than shrugging at so small a loss, he leaves the ninety-nine and searches the dark hills until he finds it. The point is not that the lost sheep had earned its rescue through any unusual talent or obvious usefulness. Its worth flowed entirely from the shepherd who treasured it and simply refused to let it vanish.
