The Ledger We Carry

Few human acts are praised as warmly as forgiveness, and few are attempted as reluctantly. Most of us keep an invisible ledger, a private record in which every insult and injury is quietly entered and preserved. We seldom notice how heavy this account has grown until someone finally asks us to cancel a particular debt. Grudges, after all, promise a strange kind of protection, whispering that vigilance alone will keep us from being wounded again. Forgiveness, when it arrives, feels less like a warm emotion than like a deliberate decision to tear out a page. The moral weight of that choice is real, because the wrong we release was genuine and the pain was not imaginary. To forgive is not to pretend that nothing happened. It is instead to choose that the past will no longer be permitted to govern the shape of the future.
