The Inner Witness

Conscience is the quiet witness within us, a faculty that judges our actions before, during, and after we perform them. Long before anyone else notices what we have done, this inner voice has already rendered its verdict. Christians have long understood conscience as something planted by God, a moral compass that points toward truth even when the surrounding culture spins wildly. Yet a compass is only useful to the traveler who is willing to follow it. Some listen; others learn to ignore the needle until it barely moves. Many people hear its warning and then, weary of resistance, turn deliberately away from what they know is right. The difficulty, therefore, is rarely knowing the good; the real challenge is finding the courage to obey it when obedience costs us something we would rather keep.

The Weight of the Crowd

Standing alone is difficult because human beings are, by design, creatures who long to belong. We are drawn toward the warmth of the group, and we instinctively fear the cold exile that dissent can bring. When everyone around us laughs at a cruel joke, applauds a dishonest shortcut, or repeats a comfortable lie, silence feels far safer than protest. Psychologists have shown that ordinary people will often deny the plain evidence of their own eyes rather than contradict a confident majority. History records with sorrow the many crowds that marched confidently toward cruelty while only a lonely few objected. The crowd seldom announces its demands aloud; instead it pressures us through a raised eyebrow, a sudden hush, or the threat of being left out. To resist that pressure, a person must treasure something higher than approval.
