A Ticket in the Wrong Direction

This reflection is inspired by the book of Jonah, in which a reluctant prophet receives an assignment he cannot bring himself to accept. God instructs Jonah to travel toward Nineveh, the capital of an empire remembered for its cruelty toward weaker neighbors. Instead of obeying, Jonah buys passage on a ship sailing in the opposite direction, hoping that sheer distance might silence the command. His flight is not the product of confusion but the product of preference, since he understands the task and still refuses it. What unsettles Jonah is not the danger of the mission but the unbearable possibility that his enemies might genuinely be forgiven. We rarely admit that a command can feel hard precisely because we already agree that it is just. Jonah could argue that Nineveh deserved judgment, and in a narrow, legal sense his complaint would be entirely accurate. Yet the narrative quietly insists that being right about another person's guilt is never the same as loving what is good. His voyage away from the city is, in the end, a voyage away from a mercy he cannot control.
