A Jar and a Well

Evening came to the town. The air was still hot. Rebekah took her jar. It was big and heavy. She walked to the well. She went every day. Step, step, step. Down the path she went.

The well was deep. The water was cool. Rebekah filled her jar. Then she turned to go.

The Tired Stranger

A man stood there. He was a stranger. He had come far. His face was dusty. His feet were dusty too.

Ten camels stood behind him. Ten! Their heads hung low. They were tired and thirsty.

The man looked at Rebekah. He had prayed for help. "God, show me a kind girl."

"Please," he said. "May I have a drink?"

Rebekah Says Yes

"Yes, sir!" said Rebekah. "Drink!" She took down her jar. She gave him water. He drank and drank. "Thank you," he said.

One Step More

Then Rebekah looked up. She saw the camels. Camels drink a lot. A LOT of water!

She could go home now. Her job was done. But she did not go. "Your camels are thirsty," she said. "I will help them too."

Down went the jar. Up came the water. Splash! One jar. Two jars. More and more jars! She poured and poured. She ran back and forth. Again and again and again.

Her arms got tired. Her feet got tired. But her heart felt glad. The camels drank and drank. At last they were full. Ten happy camels!

A Glad Surprise

The man's eyes went wide. This was the kind girl! "God led me here," he said. He bowed his head. He said thank you to God.

Then he gave her a gift. Two shiny gold bands! Rebekah ran home fast. "Come and see!" she called. The stranger stayed that night. He was welcome there.

Kindness sees a need. Kindness fills the jar. And kindness goes one step more.

(Retold from Genesis 24.)
