The Little Brown Seeds

In spring, Ben went to Grandpa's house. Grandpa had a small garden by the fence. He gave Ben a cup of seeds. The seeds were little and brown. "Can these little things grow?" Ben asked. "Yes," said Grandpa. "God put a plan in each one."

Ben made a row of small holes. He dropped one seed in each hole. Then they patted the soft dirt down. Grandpa closed his eyes for a moment. "Thank You, God, for seeds," he said. His voice was quiet, like the wind.

Waiting Is Hard

The next day, Ben ran to the garden. He looked and looked at the dirt. He saw no leaves or sprouts. He only saw plain brown dirt. "Grandpa, the seeds are not working!"

Grandpa smiled and sat on his bench. "Seeds do slow work," he said. "Slow work is still good work." Ben did not like slow work. But he wanted to see the plants. So he waited one whole week. Then he waited one more.

Every morning, Ben watered the row. The water fell like soft rain. One day, he saw tiny green dots. "They came up!" Ben shouted. Grandpa laughed a happy laugh. "God was not sleeping, was He?"

Weeds, Weeds, Weeds

In summer, the garden grew fast. The beans climbed up their poles. The tomato plants got tall and bushy. But the weeds grew fast too. Ben pulled a weed, then another. The sun was hot on his neck. "This is too much work," Ben said.

Grandpa knelt down beside him. "We pull one weed at a time," he said. "Little by little, the work gets done." So Ben pulled one weed at a time. He hummed a song while he worked. Soon the row was clean and neat. It felt good to see it.

The First Red Tomato

One morning, Ben saw something red. A round tomato hung on the vine. It was warm from the sun. Ben picked it very gently. He held it with two careful hands. "Grandpa, look what grew!"

Grandpa took off his old hat. "Let's say thank you first," he said. They bowed their heads by the fence. "Thank You, God, for sun and rain. Thank You for slow, good things." Ben said, "And thank You for Grandpa." "Amen," said Grandpa softly.

Soon there were too many tomatoes! They filled a big bag for Miss Lee next door. She smiled a big, happy smile. Giving felt as good as growing.

Ben's Own Prayer

In fall, the garden got sleepy. The leaves turned yellow and brown. Ben and Grandpa picked the last beans. They filled one whole basket to the top.

Ben looked at the quiet garden. He remembered the little brown seeds. He remembered the waiting and the weeds. Now his heart felt full and warm.

Ben closed his eyes all by himself. "Thank You, God," he whispered. "Thank You for my grandpa too." The wind moved softly through the leaves. It sounded almost like an answer.
