A Story by the Water

One morning, a great crowd gathered by the blue lake. People pressed close to hear a teacher named Jesus. There were so many that he stepped into a boat. He pushed out a little way from the sandy shore. The small waves tapped the boat like a soft drum. The people sat down on the beach to listen.

Jesus loved to teach with stories. This story was about a farmer and his seeds. "A farmer went out to sow his seeds," he began. To sow means to scatter seeds over the ground. Long ago, farmers threw their seeds by hand. The seeds flew everywhere and landed in different places.

The Path and the Rocks

Some seeds fell on the hard path beside the field. People had walked on that path for many years. The dirt was packed down, flat and hard. The seeds could not sink in at all. They just sat on top, easy to see. Soon the birds swooped down and ate every one.

Other seeds fell on rocky ground with thin soil. Soil is the soft dirt where plants can grow. Here there was only a little of it. The seeds sprouted fast, and green shoots popped up. But their roots hit rock and could not go deep. When the hot sun rose, the little plants dried out. Without deep roots, they had no water to drink. By evening they were brown and bent over.

The Thorns and the Good Soil

Some seeds fell where thorny weeds were already growing. The seeds sprouted, and the thorns sprouted too. The thorns grew taller and greedier every day. They took the sunlight, and they took the water. The little plants were choked and never made grain. Grain is the seed a plant makes for food.

But some seeds fell on good, soft, deep soil. They sank down in and drank the spring rain. Their roots went down, and their stems went up. All summer they grew strong and heavy with grain. One seed made thirty new seeds, and some made a hundred. At harvest time, the farmer gathered armfuls of golden grain. He smiled at his field like a proud father.

Four Kinds of Listeners

The crowd was quiet, thinking about the farmer. What did the strange little story really mean? Stories like this one are called parables. A parable is a small story with a big meaning inside. Later, Jesus explained this one to his close friends. The seed is like a good word from God. The four soils are like four kinds of listeners.

A path heart hears the word but never lets it in. The words bounce off like seeds on hard ground. A rocky heart is excited at first, quick and happy. But when trouble comes, the joy dries up fast. A thorny heart wants to listen, but worries crowd in. So do games, and screens, and wanting more things. Little by little, the busy weeds choke the word.

But a good-soil heart listens and holds on tight. It thinks about the word and lets it grow slowly. Then kindness grows there, with courage and quiet joy. Good things spill out, enough to share with everyone. Good soil is not about being the smartest listener. It is about making soft, quiet room for the word.

Soil Can Change

Here is a happy secret about soil: it can change. A farmer can break up a hard path with a plow. A plow is a big tool that turns over the dirt. He can pull out rocks and dig out prickly thorns. Hearts can change too, when we let God work in them.

Maybe today your heart feels hard, or busy, or afraid. That is okay, because every field starts a little messy. When a good word comes, you can be still. You can really listen and let it sink down deep. Then wait, and watch what quietly begins to grow. Your heart is a little field, and today is planting day.
