A Dry Year in Gerar

The rain did not come that year, and the land turned brown. The grass dried up, and the sheep grew thin and slow. Isaac, the son of Abraham, needed to find food for his family. He thought about traveling to Egypt, where the great river never failed. But one night, God spoke to him in the quiet dark. Stay in this land, and I will stay close beside you. So Isaac stayed in Gerar, a small town near the desert's edge.

He planted seeds in the dusty ground and waited through the weeks. That year, his fields gave back a hundred times what he had planted. His flocks grew fat, and his tents spread slowly across the hills. Even in a dry year, everything he touched seemed to grow and flourish.

But wealth can make neighbors nervous, and the people of Gerar were watching. They saw Isaac's herds cover one brown hill after another. Quietly, some of them filled his father's old wells with dirt and stones. Then the king himself came out to Isaac with a hard message. "You have grown too strong for us," the king told him plainly. "Please pack up your tents and move away from our town."
