A Red Mitten in the Snow

One red mitten lay in the cold snow. It was soft and warm and small. A rabbit hopped by and saw it. "Whose red mitten is this?" she asked. She could not keep it for herself. The rabbit gave the mitten to a fox. The fox gave the mitten to a deer. The deer gave the mitten to an owl. The mitten went from paw to paw. Each animal wanted to find its owner.

Home at Last

The owl flew high above the trees. Soon she saw a boy near a house. The boy had one cold, bare hand. "My mitten! I lost it!" he called. The owl dropped it into his hand. His hand felt warm again at last. The boy smiled and waved to her. All the forest animals felt happy. A small red mitten had found its home.
