The Constant Messenger

Every beam of light that crosses a room, a city, or the entire cosmos travels at exactly the same unchanging speed. Physicists call this speed c, and they measure it at roughly 300,000 kilometers per second through empty space. What makes this number remarkable is not its size but its stubborn refusal to vary for any observer. Nothing in ordinary experience prepares us for a quantity that stays fixed no matter how the observer moves. A tossed ball, by contrast, gains or loses apparent speed depending entirely on the motion of whoever watches it. Light alone holds firm, indifferent to the observer, as if it obeys a rule written into space itself. Whether you race toward a lamp or flee from it, the light still approaches you at that identical, unyielding velocity. This strange constancy, confirmed by countless experiments, became the foundation on which modern physics was carefully rebuilt.
