The Comfort of Precedent

When confronted by an uncertain future, human beings instinctively reach backward, searching the past for a map they can trust. The impulse feels almost biological, as though memory itself evolved to guard us against dangers we have already survived. History appeals to us because it promises that our present dilemmas, however novel they feel, have already been rehearsed by earlier generations. We tell ourselves that the mistakes of the dead need not become our own, provided that we study them attentively enough. This faith in precedent quietly underlies our schools, our courts, and the cautious deliberations of every serious government. A statesman weighing whether to negotiate or to fight consults the wars that preceded him, hoping their outcomes will disclose his own. Yet this comforting reflex conceals a difficulty that thoughtful readers of history must eventually learn to confront.
