The Vanishing Interval

We inhabit an era that treats aloneness as a malfunction, a small emptiness to be filled the instant it appears. The moment a line forms or an elevator begins to rise, our hands reach for the glowing rectangle that promises company. Screens have not created our discomfort with silence, but they have made its avoidance effortless and nearly invisible. This reflex feels harmless, even sociable, yet the constant availability of other minds quietly erodes something that thinking has always required. That something is uninterrupted solitude, the plain condition of being alone with one's own attention for a stretch of unmanaged time. Before we dismiss such solitude as loneliness wearing a respectable disguise, we ought to examine what the mind actually does when left alone. The answer, arrived at slowly, complicates the easy assumption that more connection is always the same thing as more life.
