The Border of the Sayable

Every human being inherits language as a gift so ordinary that its strangeness rarely provokes any wonder or suspicion. We assume, almost without noticing, that whatever can be known can eventually be named, described, and handed to another mind. Yet philosophers across many centuries have questioned this quiet confidence, asking whether words truly reach as far as reality extends. If language resembles a map, then we must remember that no map, however detailed, ever becomes identical to its territory. The map omits, simplifies, and flattens, and these very omissions are what allow it to remain useful to a traveler. A description of a mountain is not the mountain, and no accumulation of sentences will ever place the summit before your eyes. The moment we accept this modest comparison, a difficult question opens beneath our feet and demands a patient answer.
