The Buzzing Hive

A beehive is a busy place. A whole hive can hold many thousands of bees. Each one has an important job to do. Some bees leave the hive as scouts. They search far and wide for sweet nectar. But how does one bee tell the others where to go? Bees cannot talk the way people do. Instead, they share their news by dancing.

The Waggle Dance

When a bee finds good flowers, she hurries home. Then she begins a special move called the waggle dance. She walks straight ahead and shakes her body fast. Her wings buzz while she wiggles side to side. Next she loops back and starts all over again. Her path traces the shape of the number eight. This little dance can be quick, but it says a lot. The other bees crowd close to watch and feel.

Secret Messages

The dance hides two clues inside its steps. Every step in her dance carries real meaning. The angle of the waggle points the way to the food. If the waggle points up, the flowers face the sun. A long waggle means the flowers are far away. A short one means they are very close. In the dark hive, bees feel each move with their legs. Then they fly off to find the very same spot.

Talking by Dancing

illustration

Honeybees have no words, yet they still share ideas. Their dance floor becomes a map made of motion. Long ago, scientists watched bees and cracked this code. It shows that even tiny animals can send real messages. People once believed that only humans could truly talk. But bees prove that ideas can travel in many ways. So the next time you see a bee, stop and wonder. What might that little dancer be trying to say?
