A City Under the Grass

Deep under the grass, thousands of ants live together. This large family is called a colony. Each ant is tiny, but the colony is powerful. One queen lays all of the eggs. She is the mother of the whole colony. The worker ants do almost every other job. No ant works alone, and no ant gives up. Together, they build a home that lasts for years.

Digging the Nest

Worker ants build their nest by digging into the dirt. They carry tiny grains of soil in their strong jaws. Slowly, they dig tunnels and rooms under the ground. Some rooms hold eggs, while other rooms store food. The narrow tunnels let fresh air flow through the nest. When rain floods a tunnel, workers rush to fix it. Each ant knows its job without being told. The busy nest can grow larger every single year.

Guards at the Gate

A busy colony must stay safe from hungry enemies. Soldier ants guard the doors with large, strong jaws. If a beetle attacks, the soldiers rush to fight. Some ants even bite to defend their family. Other ants send a warning using a special smell. This smell, called a scent signal, spreads very fast. Soon hundreds of ants arrive to protect their home. By working together, they push the danger far away.

Stronger Together

One small ant cannot build a whole nest alone. But a colony can move great piles of sand. Ants share news with smells and gentle touches. They feed each other, clean the nest, and guard the young. Every ant plays a part in the plan. This teamwork keeps the whole colony alive and strong. Next time you see ants, stop and watch them closely. What could people learn from such tiny, busy workers?
