Waking at Dusk

The sun sinks behind the trees, and the forest turns quiet. Deep inside a dome of sticks, a beaver stirs. The air is cool, and the first stars begin to shine. Beavers sleep by day and work at night. She slips into the cold stream without a splash. Her wide, flat tail steers her like a paddle. Tonight she plans to build something big.

Cutting the Tree

The beaver swims to a young tree near the bank. She sits up and grips the trunk with her paws. Her front teeth are orange, sharp, and very strong. She gnaws around the wood, chip by chip. Her teeth never stop growing, so chewing keeps them short. After a while, the tall tree cracks and falls. Now she can drag the branches down to the water.

Building the Dam and Lodge

The stream runs fast, but the beaver has a plan. She piles branches, mud, and stones across the flow. This wall is called a dam, and it holds the water back. Slowly, the water rises and spreads behind it. In the middle she builds a home called a lodge. Its only doors are hidden safely underwater. Inside sits a dry room above the water line. There her family stays warm through the cold night.

A New Pond

By morning, the busy beaver has changed the land. Where a thin stream once ran, a wide pond now shines. Fish, frogs, and birds come to live near the water. The pond keeps the beaver's family safe and fed. Tired but pleased, she dives into her hidden home. Soon she will sleep, and tomorrow the work goes on. One small animal reshaped a whole corner of the forest. What else in nature quietly changes the world around it?
