The Big Idea

My family left for a whole week at the lake, and my big job was to stay home. I have always loved a tricky puzzle. The garden needed water every single day, or the young beans would droop. I did not want to carry heavy buckets across the yard each morning. So I decided to build a machine that could water the plants for me. I gathered cardboard, string, tape, and an old plastic bottle from the recycling bin. My notebook soon filled up with arrows, funnels, and hopeful little drawings.

The First Try

My first machine used a long cardboard ramp to guide water toward the plants. I poured water into the top, and it rushed down far too fast. The soggy cardboard bent, collapsed, and dumped the whole puddle on my shoes. Cold water splashed everywhere. I stared at the mess, feeling a little silly but also strangely curious. Cardboard alone was simply too weak to hold that much heavy water.

The Second Try

For my second try, I taped the bottle high above the plants like a tank. I poked one big hole so the water could drip slowly down. Instead of dripping, the water gushed out and flooded one poor little bean. The other plants stayed dry while that single sprout nearly drowned. Try two had failed too. One giant hole could never share the water evenly among them.

The Third Try

My third machine had many tiny holes, spaced neatly along a cardboard trough. This time a string was supposed to tug a little door open. But the knot slipped loose, and the door never lifted at all. The water sat still while I tugged and grumbled at the stubborn string. A weak knot, I learned, can ruin even a clever plan. Still, I refused to quit now.

It Finally Works

On the fourth morning, I fixed every mistake I had written in my notebook. I braced the cardboard with sticks so it would not sag or fold. I punched many small holes for a soft and even shower. Then I tied a strong double knot to hold the little door shut. I held my breath and slowly tugged the string. Water sprinkled across every thirsty plant at once. It finally worked! The garden glittered, and I understood at last that failure had been teaching me.
