Two Pairs of Hands
In the mountain town of Averill, an aging clockmaker named Odell trained two apprentices beneath a single lamplit bench. The first, a quick-fingered youth called Corin, moved so fast that he often finished a task before his master had finished explaining it. The second, a careful girl named Wren, worked slowly, checking each gear against the drawing until she was certain it belonged. Corin considered her caution a waste of daylight. He believed that a clever hand needed no second glance, and that speed itself was a kind of talent. Wren disagreed, though she seldom argued the point aloud. A mistake hidden deep inside a machine, she once told him, is far harder to find than it would have been to prevent. Odell watched the two of them work and quietly kept his judgment to himself.
The Great Commission
One autumn morning, the mayor asked Odell to rebuild the ancient clock that crowned the town hall tower. Because the work was far too large for any single pair of hands, the old man divided the mechanism into two equal halves. He handed one half to Corin and trusted the other, without hesitation, to Wren. Corin assembled his portion in three swift days, then spent the remainder of the week boasting of his speed. Wren, by contrast, labored quietly for a fortnight. She filed each tooth, oiled every pivot, and tested each wheel with unhurried, deliberate hands. When her section was at last complete, it turned as quietly as breath, without a single complaint of metal. Corin only smiled, certain that his own half would perform just as well.
