The Room at the Top of the Stairs

In the last house on Haeun Lane, my grandfather kept a room that smelled of ink, beeswax, and patient time. Rolls of paper leaned in the corners like sleeping herons, and a drafting table stood beneath the window where the light arrived first. He wore thin cotton gloves when he worked, as though the past could bruise. For forty years he had been a cartographer for the provincial survey office, measuring coastlines and contours that satellites can now trace in seconds. Yet the maps he drew in retirement were of a different kind, because every place on them had already disappeared.

I was seventeen the summer my mother sent me to stay with him, armed with exam books I did not intend to open. On the first evening he showed me a map of Dalbit Market, the covered arcade that had burned down before I was born. The fire had spared nothing of it, not even the account ledgers. Yet every stall was drawn to scale and labeled in his upright hand: the noodle shop, the radio repairman, the seller of secondhand encyclopedias. He traced the arcade's spine with one finger, naming the vendors as though calling a class register that only he could still answer. "You can buy a map of anywhere that exists," he said, rolling the sheet closed, "but somebody must keep the places that do not."
