할머니의 단추 상자

A Rainy Afternoon

Rain tapped on the window all afternoon. Yuna sat on the sofa with Grandma. Grandma's house smelled like warm tea. The sky was gray and heavy. Yuna could not play outside today.

Even her toys felt boring. "I am so bored," Yuna said. Grandma smiled and stood up slowly. She said, "Wait here, little one." Then she went to her bedroom.

The Old Tin Box

Grandma came back with a round tin box. The box was blue and a little rusty. She put it on the low table. Yuna opened the lid very carefully. Inside were buttons of every color! Big buttons, small buttons, shiny buttons.

Some buttons looked very, very old. One looked like a tiny gold star. Yuna touched them with one finger. "Every button has a story," Grandma said. "Pick one, and I will tell you."

The Big Brown Button

Yuna picked a big brown button first. It felt heavy and smooth in her hand.

"That was from Grandpa's winter coat," Grandma said. "He wore it on very cold days. One day, he walked in deep snow. The snow came up to his knees. He carried your mom on his back. She was little, just like you. But Grandpa just laughed and sang songs."

Yuna held the button close. It felt warm, like a small sun.

The Little Red Button

Next, Yuna found a little red button. It was shaped like a heart. Grandma laughed softly at it.

"That came from your mom's first dress," she said. "I sewed that dress by hand. Your mom wore it to her first school day. She was scared, so she held this button. She looked back and waved at me. Then she felt brave again."

Yuna smiled at the tiny heart. "Mom was scared too?" she asked. "Everyone is scared sometimes," Grandma said.

The Pearl Button

At the bottom, Yuna saw a white button. It shone like a little moon. Grandma held it for a long time.

"This one is from my wedding dress," she said. "Grandpa and I were young then. We danced all night under paper lamps. The band played our favorite song. My shoes hurt, so I danced barefoot!"

Yuna giggled at that. Grandma's eyes looked soft and happy. Yuna put the button in Grandma's hand. "Keep this one close," Yuna said.

One More Button

The rain stopped, but Yuna stayed. Outside, the sun peeked through the clouds. Yuna looked at her yellow raincoat. One button hung loose on the coat. She pulled it off very gently.

"Grandma, this button is from today," she said. "Today we sat together in the rain. You told me our family stories."

Grandma took the yellow button and smiled. She dropped it into the tin box. It landed with a small, happy click. "Now the box holds your story too," she said. Yuna could not wait to tell it someday.
